Tintern Trails

There are four walking trails around Tintern for all to enjoy.

The Gardener’s Trail, the Tintern Demesne Trail, the Bannow Bay Trail and the Foxborough Trail on which the cottage is located. All of the trails go by Tintern Abbey, a heritage site managed by the OPW. The Abbey has an interpretative centre and quaint Tea Rooms.

Tintern Abbey

Tintern abbey, once one of the most powerful Cistercian foundations in Ireland, lies on the western shore of Bannow Bay in Co. Wexford. The abbey was founded in 1200 by William Marshall (d.1219), the 1st earl of Pembroke, in fulfilment of a vow to found an abbey if he landed safely ashore after a treacherous sea crossing from Pembroke in western Wales.

The Foxborough Trail

Our cottage is located on the Foxborough Trail, we access the trail by a private bridge over the Tintern Stream from our adjoining lands.

The Foxborough Trail along the Tintern river offers a pleasant serene landscape. The combination of drifts of ferns, bluebells and wild garlic makes this a stunning walk-in springtime.

The Bannow Bay Trail

The Bannow Bay Trail is the longest trail. The trail meanders out to Saltmills, along the edge of Bannow Bay and back to the trailhead at the Abbey covering just over 7 Km.

The shoreline of Bannow Bay is within walking distance of the cottage and is a beautiful calming walk by the sea. It offers spectacular sunsets and a course of nature provided by the many sea birds which feed on the mudflats.

The Gardener's Trail

Enjoy the mixed woodland containing 200-year-old beech trees. About halfway along, discover Colclough Walled Garden which once supplied the Colclough family who lived in the abbey. Restored to its former glory, this enchanting Georgian Walled Garden with curved corners was built by the Colclough family in the early 19th Century. Set on 2.5 acres, the ornamental and kitchen gardens are separated by a brick wall with distinctive intra mural structures.
